Shell commands accessing on-screen text

Dear All,

I've had some success with making code generators that work on nedit by
typing the command line, and then pressing ctrl+(right enter). They generate
codes/ function templates to start things with.

I was wondering if there's a way for nedit to pass parts of the text down to
the shell script as well? It'd be nice to have a script that can read
through a list of C functions and then generate headers for them, for
example.

Cheers
