I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 Karlic Koala. I reinstalled
nedit (stable binary 5.5) from nedit.org:
/usr/local/bin/nedit -V

UTF8 locale not supported.
NEdit 5.5

Built on: Linux, 386, GNU C
Built at: Oct 1 2004, 15:55:40
With Motif: 2.1.30 [@(#)Motif Version 2.1.30]
Running Motif: 2.1 [unknown]
Server: The X.Org Foundation 10604000
Visual: 32-bit TrueColor (ID 0x5e)
Locale: nl_BE.UTF-8
It starts correctly, but whenever I type something and select "save as",
it segfaults, with these messages:

UTF8 locale not supported.

Class: XmTextField
Character '\57' not supported in font. Discarded.

The libmotif3 library on Debian has this bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=518025 which is related
to bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openmotif/+bug/309163
in Ubuntu.

It looks like your problem is with the motif library. Probably related
to the fact that your locale is utf8. Try starting with a different
(non-utf8) locale.

Hi Paul

I reinstalled lesstif2 and nedit from your ppa. That did the trick. Thanks!

Does this happen with Motif 2.1.3x or 2.3?

This is Paul's ppa version I currently use (and seems OK):
NEdit 5.6 CVS checkout release by Debian on Nov 18, 2008

Built on: Linux, 486, GNU C
Built at: Oct 7 2009, 08:32:41
With Motif: (Untested) 2.1.0 [@(#)GNU/LessTif Version 2.1 Release
0.95.2]
Running Motif: 2.1 [unknown]
Server: The X.Org Foundation 10604000
Visual: 24-bit TrueColor (ID 0x21, Default)
Locale: nl_BE.UTF-8

So I can't tell what happens with Motif 2.1.3x.

The reason I mention this is that I recently tried using LessTif as my
main Motif distribution, and had a terrible time with stability. It was
crashing all the time. I've also had similar experiences with 2.3, and
2.2, well, let's not go there. 2.1 has been the best version for me so
far. I notice that above you have a version of NEdit built against
LessTif, which may not be the best version of Motif to use.
Additionally, you're using a UTF-8 based locale, which is likely to
cause problems with NEdit because it doesn't support Unicode, yet.

Hello Aaron,

Just out of curiosity, here is what my nedit's About > Version has to
say:5.6 [Under Development] HEAD
Apr 12, 2008

Built on: Linux, 386, GNU C
Built at: Apr 13 2008, 00:13:28
With Motif: 2.3.0 [@(#)Motif Version 2.3.0]
Running Motif: 2.3 [unknown]
Server: The X.Org Foundation 70200000
Visual: 24-bit TrueColor (ID 0x21, Default)
Locale: sl_SI.UTF-8

and I have been running it daily without any problems ever since.
So I wonder what kind of insurmountable problems did you experience with
OpenMotif 2.3?

Sorry, I don't mean to imply that I have had insurmountable problems
with 2.3 at all. Rather, I just meant to indicate that in my experience,
not only my experience with NEdit, is that OpenMotif 2.1.30 and family
have treated me better on the whole, for a variety of reasons.

Running NEdit on 2.3 OpenMotif is going to be much better than running
it with LessTif, I would wager, but I was curious to see whether the OP
had the troubles on 2.3 as well as 2.1.30+, or if these problems were
related solely to 2.2 and LessTif, which are definitely *not* good to
use.

Most of my complaints against 2.3 stem from using OpenMotif as a
programmer, not so much as using it in deployment with programs like
NEdit.

I don't understand why lesstif and motif cannot come together and create
bettertif.

It looks like your problem is with the motif library. Probably related
to the fact that your locale is utf8. Try starting with a different
(non-utf8) locale.
Those links seem to indicate a Motif version 2.2.x, which is a known bad
version of Motif. Additionally, 2.3 hasn't fixed some of these same
issues. When stability is paramount, I usually work with 2.1.3x. Is tihs
bug present if NEdit is run using a 2.1.30 version, such as that from
IST?
