Discussion:
Control Keys stop working

Hi,

I known this sounds like a FAQ but it drives me nuts.
And some (unknown) events NEdit stops recognizing Control Keys
like Ctrl-S oder Ctrsl-Z and seems to put in a special ASCII
character into the file.

NumLock CapsLock and ScollLock are all of.
Restarting X11 cures it but that's not a general option if some
application running for a longer time. (Restarting just NEdit does not
help)

Where does this come from and how to fix it?

Many thanks for hint,
Helmut.

Do you have more then one (English) language set on your computer? If so -
next time this happens check if you didn't switch by mistake to the second
language.

I don't know how to switch languages except by setting my locale
which cannot be done by accident. (I'm running Linux)

Thanks,
Helmut.

I don't know, but I may have the same problem. It happens reliable
after pressing Ctrl+L. To fix it, I switch to another virtual desktop
and back.

Here, Ctrl+L doesn't cause it.
Next time, I'll try to switch the virtual desktop.

If I remember correctly, it is a long time bug related to Motif which
has not been overcome.

When it happens (and it do for me too), Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-C.... insert the
control character itself instead of executing the binded function.
A way to have the keys working again is to click on a menu entry (any of
them) and clic in the text window (to make yhe menu disapearing) and
then you can press Ctrl-Z to cancel the control keys insertions. Then
Nedit works as expected.

Philippe.

I have not seen this with the X server running on Linux, but I have on
Windows with Exceed. In that case it might have something to do with
Citrix, which manages to muck up just about anything complex,
irrespective of whether the X server is on the metaframe or on the laptop.

I ususlly find doing Ctl-Z then repeating the original Ctl works correctly.

Sorry, how to do that when Ctrl-Z is broken itself?

Thanks,
Helmut.

I find that, when this occurs, using the mouse to call up a menu, then
dismissing it by clicking in the edit area, causes the problem to go
away until the next time it happens.
