Hi All

I am still checking to see if anyone knows where the Preferences Language
Mode information is kept on my computer.

The system is UNIX based.

I would like to copy the configuration file to another UNIX
station/computer.

Please respond if you know.

Regards,

Steve

This information is saved in your nedit resource file. If you have made no
changes to the language mode settings, there are default values built into the
executable. Typically the file will either be $HOME/.nedit for older versions,
or $HOME/.nedit/nedit.rc for newer ones (at least on unix-like systems). Try
the menu Preferences->Save Defaults... - this displays a confirmation dialog
to update the file, saying exactly where it is.

Hi George,

Would it be a dtlogin.rc or xlib.rc file?

Regards,

Steve

PS I did down load Version 5.5 Sep 30, 2004 version, and it is up and
running.

Steve,

You are correct that the .nedit file you found is likely the one you
need
to copy to the other machine, as that is the only config file created by the
version you are using.

One comment about your find command searching for nedit.rc files. It
should
be 'find . -name "*.rc" -print' or something that will get the nedit part
of the
nedit.rc name.

I'm not sure what version started using the .nedit configuration
folder
instead of the file .nedit, and also I'm not sure how well upgraded versions
will
be able to read version 5.2 configuration files. However, even if your
other
machine has a newer version, or you put a newer version on it, it is worth a
try
to put the current .nedit file in you home folder before you start up the
new
version.

The current version is version 5.5, and there are test sources
available
for version 5.6 if you want to try that one. Look at the download tab on
http://www.nedit.org for the latest versions.

Hi Tony,
First thanks for the help.
Second, I still have not found exactly what I am looking for (or at least
I
Post by Steve Michael Eastin
don't think I have).
When I go to Preferences, Save Defaults, it prints out;
"Default preferences will be saved in the .nedit file in your home
directory. NEdit automatically loads this file each time it is started".
I did a search using 'find . -name ".nedit" -print', and find .nedit in
three folders.
Only one folder had the .nedit with today's date (meaning it was changed
today, and most likely the one I need).
I did a search using 'find . -name ".rc" -print' and no files were found.
Here is my question: is the .nedit file the only file which I need to copy
to another machine, so I will have same Nedit configuration which I am
currently using, or are there other configuration file which will need to
be

copied also?
As an FYI this version of Nedit is 5.2 May 2001.

Steve

Steve,

The nedit man page gives useful information about the files that it
works with. The nedit man pages are a part of the distribution. Here is
an excerpt from the FILES section:

FILES
From version 5.4 on, NEdit creates a directory in which NEdit’s spe‐
cial files reside. This directory is named ’.nedit’ by default.

nedit.rc
This is an X resource file which contains most user settings for
NEdit. It is read at startup and written by selecting the item
’Save Defaults...’ in the Preferences menu. Do not edit this file
by hand, all settings can be reached via the ’Default Settings’
menu.

nedit.history
The list of recently opened files. Do not edit this file by hand.

autoload.nm
A file that can contain a number of NEdit Macro Language state‐
ments and subroutine definitions. The statements will be executed
when an NEdit server starts, the subroutines will be loaded for
later reference. This file will not be created or modified by
NEdit (unless you load it and edit it of course).

Note that NEdit still supports the older names for these files, which
were used by version 5.3 and below. These legacy file names are
‘$HOME/.nedit’, ‘$HOME/.neditdb’ and ‘$HOME/.neditmacro’, respec‐
tively. This legacy naming scheme will be used if NEdit detects that
‘$HOME/.nedit’ is a regular file.

See also the entry for NEDIT_HOME under ENVIRONMENT, above.

So the "dtlogin.rc or xlib.rc" files are not from nedit.
